Working Title: Freckles
Mixed Media: Water soluble ink, pencils, wax pastels
Approximately 19×20 inches

So many ideas … so little time.
I really have a hankerin’ to do some bird art. Pelicans, crows and owls. But since I had this cow all drawn out and laying on my drafting table for months … and since I really wanted to throw some color down, I began her.

I am half way through a drawing of Pelicans and now of course since it’s October and my yard is full of crows cleaning up the walnuts I may finally get around to trying my hand at them as well. So many ideas … so little time.

But for now I am having fun with the latest of the Moo Crew (aka The Cowgirl Collection, aka The Happy Heifers) She’s a long way from being done but you get the idea. Unlike my last heifer “Hattie” who I’m not sure ever even made it to the blog. I have been taking in progress shots of this one so there will be a start to finish post on this painting.

While slinging color on this piece I am also toying with Christmas card designs for this year’s card. (Because you know I am a multitask master) I have a deer that I sketched out last year that I’d love to try.

But it seems to me …. since I need (want)to have 12 more cows for next years exhibition … well it seems like a cow card may be in order. Moo-ey Christmas and all that.

So because we had yet another blustery, blizzardery ridiculously cold weekend I stayed at the farm and only sojourned out feed and water critters and check the pipes at the gallery. Happily it all went smoothly. But because my Longhorn painting is too large and too delicate to take out into that kind of weather, I opted to start a smaller piece at home. After all I didn’t want to waste a whole stuck inside weekend and not be creating.

And so this is what I did.

I Think I’ve Been Watching Too Much Project Runway

There’s lots of reason why I’m attracted to creating a particular image. For this piece it was the color story.

Uhm … not sure that the color story has ever been a reason for me before. But flamingos were calling my name and all I had were images from like a decade ago to work with. And as I was flipping through my photos I came across one of a large flock, where the light hit the water and I thought I could make something of it.

I would push the colors and challenge myself. Trying to paint water all by itself presents an incredible challenge. I want it to glow have depth and reflect off my birds.

This piece is going to be packed with blues, greens, golds and of course pinks, purples and reds.

So here’s hoping I can squeeze all that into one image creating a believable and yet vibrantly artful piece.

BTW

I will get back to the longhorns too. I have begun them though ever so barely. This piece is small enough that I am hoping I’ll get it done in the next 48 hours or so.

So here is what I’m working on now. The plan for Daisy is to be primarily a buttery yellow colored heifer but color gets the best of me so who knows how she’ll end up.

This is another mixed media piece using ink, water color pencils and Neopastels II and measures approximately 18 inches square though it will be cropped down when done.

The background has a film over it to protect it from my messy habits. It will be colored in but I don’t want the oranges to muddy whatever I decide to do with it.
